In midst of this cultivated intimidation, are the people who are trying to eke out a living from their traditional lands. Brazil is 34 times bigger than the UK, and yet its population is only three times as large.
In the UK, there are 257 people per km2, in Brazil the density is 1/10th of that. Brazil is not short of land or resources. In fact it is fecund on all fronts.
All of the people pictured here either knew the victims of atrocities, or live in traditional communities close by, that suffer day-to-day intimidation. They grow traditional crops, manioc and beans, pigs and chickens for protein, and live off the bounty that the forest provides - nuts and fruits. They are self-sufficient in all and ask only for peace.
